The Swinging Screen and London 60s Week

London 60s Week is an annual festival that celebrates the creative explosion from this special decade with London’s past and present creative talent.

It was the golden age of British film – from the gritty realism of the kitchen sink films to the spectacular epics like ‘Doctor Zhivago’; musicals such as ‘My Fair Lady’; rock movies such as ‘A Hard Day’s Night’; the rise of the iconic Hammer Studios and the birth of the greatest franchise in movie history – the James Bond films; historical drama: ‘A Man For All Seasons’; science-fiction: ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’; epic adventure: ‘Zulu’; spy yarns a’plenty with ‘The Spy Who Came in From The Cold’ and acclaimed drama such as ‘The Servant’.

For every film genre there was a British production, with cult movies like ‘The Italian Job’, animation with ‘The Yellow Submarine’; comedy: 'Alfie'; war: ‘The Great Escape’ and directors such as David Lean, John Schlesinger and Carol Reed.

There were British Oscars galore and actors: Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Albert Finney, Peter Sellers, Michael Caine and actresses: Julie Christie, Susannah York; Vanessa Redgrave; Sarah Miles, Julie Andrews, Jane Asher.
