Michael Caine takes on the role of the miserable old miser Ebenezer Scrooge, a role that he tackles with admirable grimness, despite being surrounded by hordes of Muppets for the duration. Based on the Dicken’s novel (here, Dickens is played by the lovely beak-nosed Gonzo, who narrates the tale with the help of Rizzo the Rat) they take us on a journey through dank London, with Scrooge presiding over the destinies of those who cannot meet their debts, even Christmas doesn’t make him merciful. Such meanness is tolerated by his deceased business partners who visit him to warn him about the consequences of his misdeeds. And so Scrooge is visited bythe ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, who provide a little darkness to an otherwise bright film.
